Planets 2
We continue our exploraton of the planets...
Mars
Mars is a terrestrial planet like Earth and is a small rock body fourth from the Sun. Mars has polar ice caps that grow and recede with the change of seasons which are very similar to those of Earth.
Mars is approximately half the size of Earth and is often referred to as the "Red Planet" because of its reddish appearance.
Jupiter
Jupiter is the biggest planet in our Solar System and has four moons of its own as well as many smaller moons. In 1610, astronomer Galileo Galilei spotted the four moons of Jupiter through his primitive telescope. He had discovered what were to become know as the the Galilean satellites, Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
Saturn
Similar to Jupiter, Saturn is made up of hydrogen and helium gases. Saturn's rings which circle the planet are thousands of kilometers from the surface and are made up of mostly water ice. Saturn has 52 known moons, the largest of which is called Titan.
Uranus
Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun and takes 84 years to complete one orbit. With no solid surface, Uranus is one of the gas planets similar to Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune. Uranus gets its blue-green colour from methane gas as sunlight is reflected Uranus' cloud tops which lie beneath the layer of methane.
Neptune
Neptune is the eighth and furthest planet from the Sun which is nearly 4.5 billion kilometers away. Neptune orbits the Sun once every 165 years. Neptune may be the windiest planet in the Solar System. Winds travel across the surface at over 2,000 kph.
